Wave Energy Realised: Powering the Blue Economy

Transforming untapped wave energy potential into a reliable and clean energy source for Europe.

The ONDEP project aims to harness wave energy to provide clean, reliable power across Europe. It will establish a 2MW wave energy farm in Peniche, Portugal, featuring four WaveRoller® units—making it one of the largest bottom-fixed wave energy farms in the world.

By emulating operational conditions for future large-scale wave energy farms, ONDEP will develop a framework for successful gigawatt-scale deployments.

The project includes the first comprehensive environmental analysis for wave energy, addressing critical sustainability metrics.

Uniting nine countries and 14 leading organisations, ONDEP aims to unlock 11 wave energy farms by 2030, targeting a cumulative capacity of 83 MW and a global warming potential (GWP) of less than 25 gCO2eq/kWh.

With a projected levelized cost of energy (LCOE) below 100€/MWh by 2035, ONDEP will contribute to a sustainable blue economy and create up to 500,000 jobs in Europe.

This collaborative effort positions Europe as a leader in renewable energy innovation while supporting EU climate goals.

This initiative builds on over 20 years of experience, including two years of full-scale demonstration of the patented WaveRoller® technology.
