ONDEP Project Kick-Off Meeting Marks a Significant Step Forward for Wave Energy in Europe
8 October 2024, Brussels – key partners of the ONDEP project convened in Brussels for a successful kick-off meeting. This initiative aims to unlock the vast potential of wave energy in Europe, specifically targeting the establishment of a 2 MW wave energy farm off the coast of Peniche, Portugal.
The ONDEP project seeks to address the untapped potential of wave energy, projected to reach up to 1,800 TWh annually in Europe. To enhance market confidence, the project will create a fully operational wave energy farm composed of four WaveRoller® units connected to the grid, building on over ten years of experience at this site.
Key Objectives of the ONDEP Project:
Interdisciplinary Approach: Assemble a diverse consortium that combines maritime science, engineering, environmental sciences, and policy studies, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of wave energy deployment.
Local Manufacturing: Promote local manufacturing in Spain and Portugal to bolster the project’s infrastructure and supply chain.
Offshore Installation: Develop and execute efficient offshore installation processes for wave energy technologies.
Environmental Analysis: Conduct the first extensive environmental assessment for wave energy production over several decades to understand ecological impacts.
Social Acceptance: Integrate social sciences to enhance societal trust and acceptance of wave energy, addressing potential biases through public engagement.
Gender Equality: Promote gender balance in the wave energy workforce by identifying and addressing barriers and biases within the industry.
Open Science Practices: Facilitate open access to research findings, data, and analyses to foster collaboration and innovation across the wave energy sector.
The ONDEP project is designed to advance technological readiness while creating robust connections between research, industry, policymakers, and the community. By 2030, ONDEP aims to enable the deployment of 11 farms across 8 countries, generating a cumulative capacity of 83 MW while supporting a sustainable blue economy.
About ONDEP
Funded by the European Union, the ONDEP project (ONdas DE Peniche) represents a collaborative effort among 14 leading organizations across nine countries. Its goal is to pave the way for large-scale wave energy deployment in Europe, driving innovation, job creation, and a transition toward renewable energy sources.
